Excuse me, are you an SPG?

It's been a term used to describe ang moh-loving females since the British colonised Singapore. But just who is an SPG in this day and age?

[eastciti.com, December 28]
I dated an Englishman for 3 years, 2 of those in Australia where I was studying. So, I'd never encountered what it was like to be an SPG in my home country.

But after returning to Singapore after 6 years, reality settled in. I was classified as an SPG to anyone and everyone, whether I liked it or not.

Since the controversial Pinkerton debate and Jim Aitchison's Sarong Party books, the topic of SPGs has been treated with humour.

Since then, Singapore has attracted even more white-collar males from the US and Europe resulting in many local females who've never dreamed of dating a white man before, actually going out with them.

Since the debates and books, feelings have changed and to many innocent SPGs, it's no longer a joke. The hurt is very real especially from family, friends and even strangers.

Nine months after I returned to Singapore, I encountered my first nasty experience. One night, my boyfriend and I were about to catch a taxi home. While walking to the cab, a stranger-a Chinese male, in a drunken state started yelling at us.

He called me an SPG, saying that a girl like me should go home with him instead of ang moh, and that I was "wasted" on a white boy.

Staggering towards us, he reached to grab my hand. Luckily my boyfriend's quick reflexes pulled me away and we scooted into the cab.

After the incident, I decided do some research. Going into all the commonly known SPG hangouts, Next Page, Carnegies, Brix, Brannigans and No.5 Emerald Hill, I talked to a few women in the bars who were with ang moh men, and noted a few distinct differences between our stereotypical SPG and the not so typical.

Let's refresh our memories. A Sarong Party Girl is a derogatory term to describe local Singaporean girls who only date Caucasians.

The SPG stereotype is tanned and skimpily-clad and her most flashy accessory is her fake American/Australian/English accents.

Many of us who have been frequenting any type of bars will realise that not every female with a Caucasian male is tanned, or dressed skimpily. I've realised that nowadays, an SPG goes further than a short tight black dress.

Here are my findings for a true Sarong Party Girl.
