Samantha Toh is a tomboy at heart

In our latest Glam Slam instalment, we find that she's more Sam than Samantha in her preference for gadgets over clothes.

Samantha Toh is a tomboy?

No way, you say, recalling the demure and gentle florist in The Stratagem.

However, think of her as in her role as the bubbly and chirpy host for Entertainment Beat on Fridays instead. Sporting an ear-length haircut, the young host is almost always prancing around, from what I can see on TV.

That is more like the real her.

Daring and uninhibited in character, she gives the impression of being frank and forthright, which reminds me of the chivalrous swordswomen from days of yore.

She's A Gadget Gidget

Therefore, it comes as no surprise when the 24-year-old discloses that she is rather tomboyish.

Instead of browsing through clothes racks, she heads for the electronics department in stores to check out the newest gadgets like digital cameras, handphones, palmtops and computers.

"I like to update myself on the latest trends in technology. I would only consider investing in these high-tech devices only if they are practical. I'm not a miser, but I do want to use my money wisely," she says.

Comfort Is Her Style

When it comes to her selection of garments, the pragmatic actress and host singles out comfort as the biggest criteria. Shirts and dresses are too complicated.

Citing white, blue, black and red as her favourite colours, she says: "I go for casual outfits like capri pants, jeans, track shoes and cotton T-shirts. Simple is my style. You would rarely catch me in spaghetti-strap tops unless they are for filming. I'm more of the conservative kind."

"However, I get bored with my old clothes quite soon, say after 2-3 months. Then I will stash the old batch of clothes in some god-forsaken corner of the cupboard and buy a new batch. And the cycle repeats itself.

"But don't be mistaken, I don't spend a lot each month, only about $200-300."

Watch Out

At 1.7 metres, the willowy damsel commands attention and she demands the same of her accessories - but in style, not brand, mind you.

"I even buy them from pasar malam stores," she exclaims.

Her boyishness can also be seen in her selection of watches. At a glance, most of the timepieces she shows me appear to be large and chunky, pretty similar to the watches worn by guys.

When I mention my observation, the Aries ponders a while before replying, "I didn't care if they were masculine or feminine when I bought them, I just thought they look good and are suitable for me."

Her Feminine Side

Nevertheless, girls will be girls and I manage to suss out some feminine details in her closet. The child in her is revealed in these jewellery pieces with cartoon themes.

Which girl does not owe a few pieces of silver or costume jewellery? Here are some of Samantha's favourite silver accessories.

If you like her style, then head for Bugis Junction and you may just spot the Malaysia Champion of Star Search 1999. She reveals that the vibrant shopping complex is her favourite haunt.

"I don't like to shop in Orchard because the type of clothes there are not as varied and are more upmarket. Bugis Junction is more my style."
