Glam Slam:
Florence Tan dared not bare

You have seen her as brash Margaret Ma in Wok Of Life, as coquettish Lan Fenghuang in The Legendary swordsman, as modern Ye Qing in On The Frontline and as sexy Lifeng in Hainan Kopi Tales. Despite having a very modern, fashionable image, Florence Tan is unbelievably old-fashioned at heart and a good girl in every sense of the word.

You may not believe it, but on-screen sex kitten Florence Tan claims that she dared not wear spaghetti-strapped tops or tubes until she starred in On The Frontline. "The character, Ye Qing, was a modern woman; she wore trendy party clothes. It was only after that role that I took to wearing those kinds of apparel," she demurs.

"It's true, back in school, I never wear such revealing clothes so I guess I'm not used to it. Sometimes, roles I played affect my dress sense; they exposed me to more dressing styles and it was only then that I realised that certain clothes could be suitable for me, too, though I had never thought of them as nice before."

Does the young artiste have her own style in dressing? "I have no particular style; I have yet to cultivate a style of my own. So far, it all depends on the occasion. Off-screen, I'm basically a jeans and tee person. In my daily activities, I dress simply. I would only don more unique stuff for road shows and other promotions because, in showbiz, I need to 'decorate' myself. I prefer the sunny, youthful look. I don't like dull and chunky wear."

Unlike most girls her age, the 23-year-old is not a big fan of shopping. "I shop when I need something, I don't enjoy window shopping or shopping for the sake of shopping. If I'm shopping for trendy clothes for causal wear or outdoor promotions, I would take the time to walk about and look for the outfit I want, if it is a classy dress for a function, I would just go to 1 or 2 shops and settle it. I shop on the Internet occasionally and I quite enjoyed that. Save time, save money (transport) and it is fuss-free. Actually, I'm afraid to wear the same thing as another person during a function, too. So, I would often ask the shop owner how many identical pieces of the clothing he / she has before buying." What does the non-fan of shopping usually shop for then? "Tops are my top choice, then shoes, finally accessories. I have a whole wardrobe of tops to match a few pieces of jeans and skirts."

Her Accessories

While her dress sense may veer towards the minimalist, Florence seems to have a penchant for cool accessories, like funky sunglasses, ornate ethnic jewellery and even bhindis, those stick-on jewels that Indian women sport.

However, she claims that she hardly shops here. "It's the same kind of things everywhere. I would just go for dinner or movie and back when I go to town, so it's possible that I do not shop at all. If I'm overseas, no matter if it's for filming or on my own, I would shop furiously, I guess it's typical shoppers' behaviour. Once you've missed the chance to get that item when you were overseas, you've missed it, period. Therefore, the typical approach is better to make an unsound purchase than to miss it. When I'm overseas, I would shop for clothes even though I don't need them at that moment. If I do that here, the clothes may be outdated by the time I got around to wearing them."

The down-to-earth actress is not brand-conscious. She says matter-of-factly, "Being brand conscious means that you need a lot of funds to pursue brands. I go for the more popular and affordable brands like M)phosis, Mango, DKNY, CK, Miu Miu; for bags, I like Prada. For shoes, I like the shoes from Chew Chow Meng's store, The Shoez. The shoes there are simple and can easily match with my clothes." Then she whispered, "Must publicise for Chow Meng." A good friend, indeed. .

The nature of her job has brought her to various countries, and Florence gave us the low-down on what's good where. "Thailand is too crowded and hot, I have no patience to shop there, if not, it will be a good shopping paradise as there is ample variety in commodities there. The selection of clothes and accessories in Korea is pretty similar to that in Japan, but it is much cheaper. Fashion changes very quickly there, so there is always new stuff to buy. Fashion in Hong Kong is very stylish and has character but the things there are relatively expensive. As for North India, I find the girls there very pretty and they have such beautiful clothes, you can find very ethnic stuff there. I bought a lot of accessories from North India but I don't come across the right occasions to wear them."

More evidence to show that Florence is actually a simple and down-to-earth person at heart: she reveals that her favourite colour is actually white. "My pyjamas and normal casual wear is mostly in white. However, white is a boring colour to wear on screen, so during filming or outdoor events, I try to wear more colours. But the bottom line is, I must be comfortable with what I wear. For example, I'm not suited to wearing clothes that are body hugging as they will show off my fat." With that, she burst into peals of laughter.
