Never
Know What You're Gonna Get
As
a woman, what keeps Amie going when danger lurks in every corner?
"What
attracts me to documentary is that there are so many everyday stories
around you that might be very subtle, very quiet, tucked away into
the corner, that aren't overtly dramatic, that aren't making huge
statements about anything.
"Those
are the stories that I'm attracted to. There's something that happens
when you are making a documentary, the mystery, the unknown."
The
unexpected seems to have extended to her personal life as well.
While
making a feature documentary in Las Vegas called Stripped And Teased:
Voices Of Vegas Women, the 39-year-old filmmaker went through the
process of meeting, marrying her Italian husband, getting pregnant
and having her son Conor Arnodo, now a cherubic 5-year old whom
she brought to Singapore.
Singaporean
Students Impress Her
Amie was here to share her experience and knowledge with film
students of Ngee Ann Polytechnic during the week-long workshop,
which spawned 7 short documentaries.
What
does she think of the standard of the work produced by the 12 participants,
some whom have already graduated but are hungry to learn and do
more?
"I'm
very impressed by my class, their knowledge of documentaries. They've
already in the minds made a commitment to this form of filmmaking
and they've watched quite a number of documentaries," she says.
"I
think especially this age group 17- 21 is a time in your life, very
exciting time in your life where you are really saying Who am I?
What is the make-up of me? Where am I going? What are my values?
"And
that is a great time to be making a documentary."
