Were
they Man enough for us?
We take you through 3 nights of raging female hormones leading up
to the finals of Manhunt International 2000.
First
stop: Exotic Hunks ROARing to Go
(Clubwear Preliminary for Manhunt International)
It
was Saturday Night Fever indeed on 23 September, the night the world's
best-looking hunks sent temperatures crashing through the roof at
ROAR. Considering that our little isle is known for being more than
a little short on males of the cute variety, it was small wonder
that the club was jam-packed with eager females craning their necks
for a glimpse at the top picks from the world over. And boy, what
a sight!

A half hour
past the designated show time of 10pm and there were still no hunks
in sight at ROAR, Singapore's newest nightspot on Cairnhill Road.
As the minutes ticked on, one could almost sense the restlessness
building up in the roomful of mostly females, all of whom had sacrificed
their Saturday night just so to rub shoulders with the most gorgeous
international contestants from Manhunt International 2000. Then
it happened. The host announced the start of the Club Wear preliminary
to be held that night, an excited catcall rang out and the first
of the bevy of beefy contestants strode into the room.
To
pulsating music and unceasing shrill screams from the fervent female
audience, each Manhunt contestant strode purposefully towards the
seated judges and smiled his best smile. Interestingly enough, while
most of the contestants hailed from Western continents,
dark looks and exotic features reigned on the catwalk that
night. With the exception of a few golden boys, namely from Australia,
Denmark, Gibraltar, Iceland and Latvia, the rest of the 32 hunky
contestants boast dark features and hair in the tradition of Ricky
Martin
and Enrique Iglesias. Even the undisputed crowd favourite, Germany's
Krisda Duangphung, looked uncannily Asian with his exotic dark eyes
and hair, and almost bashful smile.
Club
Wear was the theme of the night's preliminary, but looking at how
some of the men were geared up, the night might have been more aptly
named the National Costume preliminary. It was quite easy to guess
the country each man came from based on the outfit he wore. Like
Singapore's Brandon Choo, decked out in an embroidered vest much
like those costumes favoured by lion dance troupes. Very fortunately,
he enjoyed kind support from a home audience very generous with
their catcalls and shouts of encouragement. South Africa's Paul
Carlisle, on the other hand, had the misfortune of being togged
in a flaming red raincoat and see-through blouse that made him look
like he had arrived at the wrong party. My personal choice for best
Club Wear would have gone out to Mexico's David Zepeda, whose loud
pink shirt and matching pink aviator shades reflected the flamboyance
of his own country's colourful culture. Quite predictably though,
the eventual winner was Curacao's Geraldino Nicolina, who looked
quite at home in his loose shirt and ethnic print palazzos. Groovy.
