Chen Tianwen | The answer? They
are all striking stars…with a golden tan, that is. Truly, White Horse
Prince Charming is such a passé image in showbiz. Forget
about slapping on the sun block! It's now cool to be tan in the 21st century.
It's
sunny to be tan! While
some male celebrities seem to be "born" with the sun-kissed complexion, others
have made special effort for it. Take the case of Hong Kong singer-actor
Steven Ma. Apart from making conscious
efforts to engage in more outdoor activities to embrace the sun, he had even invested
in an indoor sun-tanning bed to shed off his fair look. "It's
more convenient this way!" he enthused. The
ex-karaoke champion was brought in by The Event Specialist for a mini-concert
at Canto last Friday.
Upbeat and
frank like the drama roles of doctor (Healing
Hands) and lawyer (File of Justice) whom he is best remembered for, Steven
attributed the rise of tan taut men to 3 reasons.
1.
Spice up! "The image of a male artiste has always been boring. There
isn't much room for changes. Unlike girls, we men can only either sport short
or long hair; fair or tan complexion."
2.
Open up! "Having a glowing tan often gives one the perception
of a fit, dynamic and more 'man' look. It definitely helps to open up for opportunities
in showbiz."
3. Cover up!
"Being tan helps to camouflage zits and dark eye circles -- sans the
thick make-up -- especially when we artistes are always lacking in sleep.
"I
was actually so used to my dark complexion that when it starts turn fairer, I
felt so 'naked' when I look at myself in the mirror! "But
of course, the final decision (tan or fair) still lies in the project or role
requirement."
