Rayson romances Liping in a big way

August 7, 2001

Flowers and flashy cars are no longer the only ways to woo a woman's heart. Just ask Rayson Tan, the new-age Romeo.

So, who initiated the romantic relationship?

The famous Significant Other of Miss Ai-yo-yo, otherwise known as the cherubic Chen Liping, almost choked when the question was posed during lunch at House of Mao. (Click here to win dining vouchers!)

"Me," Rayson deadpanned.

An icon in his own right, Rayson is ever the chivalrous swordsman whom you can acquaint with in his upcoming period drama, Master Swordsman Lu Xiaofeng (Season 2).

Leaping to the rescue of his sweetheart who wasn't present, he continued with a chuckle, "Of course I've got to say it's me!"

Ah…such is the sweet security blanket he constantly showers over the popular actress since they started dating each other in the early 90s.

And being a celebrity couple often means getting twice the attention wherever they go.

Although they are used to it already, Rayson readily admitted that they often head to Bangkok, Thailand to bask in some precious private moments.

"Bo bian (Hokkien for 'no choice') lah!"

Food's the way to a woman's heart

Besides being bonded by their Teochew roots, their love life is no doubt spiced up by the common passion for (Japanese) food.

"Liping makes very good California rolls," he said with a gleam of pride.

But don't be taken in. It's really Rayson who's the better cook.

Chums Zoe Tay and Pan Lingling have sworn by his homemade laksa and chao guotiao (fried noodles).

On Liping's birthday, the new-age lover even went the extra mile to whip up a double-boiled seafood soup in a honeydew -- complete with exquisite carvings on the melon, mind you.

The professional standard totally fooled Liping into thinking that the deluxe dish was catered from famed restaurant.

Recalling the fond memory, he mused, "She was so touched that she went, 'Aiyo, why spend so much money?'

"But I have actually mastered it from watching (culinary expert) Fang Tai's instructional programme."

Zoe's eager for their blissful big day!

Still, it seems that the golden couple has no intention of undergoing customary nuptials as yet
-- having registered their marriage "few years back".

That had Zoe expressing her concern in a separate interview.

"Liping's just lazy like me. Hopefully my upcoming wedding would inspire and spring her (and Rayson) into action," she said.

Flashing an easy smile, this Romeo did not wish to elaborate on their big plans.

But you can count on him to take the lead (again). We can almost hear him repeating, "Of course I've got to say it's me!"

Standby for the wedding bells!
