Singapore means a whole lot of different meanings to different Singaporeans. We have witnessed different stages of the country's development. What significance does the Lion City hold for Zoe, Shaoguang and Ping Hui?

My Singapore

"Singapore is a vibrant, idealistic and energetic country. I have studied her history, she has grown tremendously since independence and she's growing each day. I love Singapore, it's peaceful and safe here, no disasters, really a haven," says Ah Jie.

Ping Hui agrees. "She has improved a lot since independence. It's safe to live here. What's more, many of Singapore's historical problems have been resolved, that's why I feel proud to be a Singaporean.

Shaoguang adds in his views, "Singapore is always improving. Just like the theme in our national anthem. From colonial days to independence to the present, Singapore has always been improving. I hope she will grow to be more mature and more gracious."

My Singapore dream

"For the country to be more prosperous in the new millennia and for the people to live in a peaceful and happy environment," says Zoe.

"Basically, it's still for the people to live and work in peace and contentment. We should be alert to possible dangers in times of peace. After all, our country is small and we have no natural resources. The people need to work hard and be united in order for us to have a place in the world," says Shaoguang seriously.

My childhood story

Both Shaoguang and Zoe lived in kampongs when they were young.

Shaoguang begins,"From young, I have been in touch with nature, it's pretty healthy. Later, we moved to housing estates. Basically, my lifestyle changes with the progress of society, therefore I have a deep sense of involvement in the country's development."

Zoe adds on, "It's really fortunate to be a Singaporean. From my childhood till now, living conditions have always been good. I seldom go to the city when I was young. I had a wonderful childhood together with my childhood friends, who are mostly my neighbours' kids. We played 'house', hide and seek, finger-guessing games and hopscotch."

"We didn't have dolls then. We would pretend rolled up blankets to be dolls. Although there were not many toys, we were happy. Life was simple then, with less material needs."

My favourite local food

Ping Hui says with enthusiasm, "I like everything and anything. Apart from my family, the thing that I miss most when I was abroad was local food. You know, it's painful to be missing my favourite food."

"I like authentic local food like char kway tiao, laksa, shun kway, fish porridge and fish head curry, nasi lemak and roti prata," Zoe rattles off her mental list.

"The different races in Singapore have their own cuisine, the characteristic of local food is that they are not so oily but yet spicy, they are healthy, delicious yet economical."

Looks like the Singapore Tourism Board should consider getting Zoe to be Singapore's ambassador to promote local food to our overseas friends.

Favourite places

"It is not the place but the company. If I'm with good friends, I would be happy regardless if where I am. Many people feel that Singapore is a boring place but I beg to differ. There are many interesting places which these people have not been to. One can have a good time in a small prata shop, too," says Ping Hui.
