Jungle
trek, kayak, open sea swim, mountain bike and abseil.
Those are the challenges what participants of
Adventure
Quest have are up for. And get this: The gungho participants
need to complete in the expedition style adventure race which covers
150 km in 24 to 36 hours.
No mean feat indeed.
Organized
by Marine Parade Community Development Council, People's Association
Adventure Pursuits Section and Singapore Sports Council, this adventure
race, which is the largest in Singapore, attracted more than 500
people aged between 17-53 years old.
 Brandon
Wong and Liang Weidong are handpicked among many other MediaCorp
artistes to participate in the 'Tag Team' category. This 'amateurish'
category, made up of 10 participants in each team, would have them
complete the race in relay form.
The other category, aptly named the 'Are You
Insane' has the 4 members of the team completing the entire route
together.
 The
2 actors shall complete the race together with 8 other national
athletes in the Celebrity Team come July 28 - 29. They would be
running about 5-10 km apparently and will attempt Jummar, a wall-climbing
technique.
Having
had similar experience in the AXN
Challenge, you would think that Brandon is full of confidence,
but the modest actor said that the ways of hooking oneself up to
the equipment is different this time round.
And it does not help that they have to conquer
a height of about 6 storeys compared to the previous height of 2
storeys.
Said
Brandon, "I have tried the Jummar once and scraped my hands
as a result. As I'm busy filming Hotel and Lucky Numbers presently,
I have no time to exercise. I would have to count on my stamina
built up from previous exercises."
In case you didn't know, Brandon is an active
member of MediaCorp's Celebrity Basketball team. The lanky actor,
who sports a long hairdo, is so good at it that he once represented
Malaysia.
Judging from the man's past sports record and
the degree of admiration a fellow scribe has for him after seeing
him in action in AXN Challenge, the adventure quest would surely
pose no problem.
On
the other hand, fellow teammate Weidong has no prior experience
in such races. But he is no pushover. An active member in MediaCorp's
Celebrity Soccer Team, he was used to regular practices. Besides,
participants in Adventure Quest 2001 had to go through medical checkups
and fitness tests to assess their suitability for the ultra-endurance
race. So, there's no disputing Weidong's eligibility since he passed
all the tests.
Currently
involved in the mass display singing segment in NDP
2001 and training for the coming race on his own, Weidong was
inspired by his fellow colleagues in the AXN Challenge. He said
enthusiastically, "I wanted to test my level of endurance."
Way to go, guys. We wish you all the best.
