Going ga-ga over Radio Music Awards 2001

July 16, 2001

It doesn't take an appearance from a1 to bring fans to a high, the Radio Music Awards (RMA) was perfectly capable of that.

Of course the energy level and excitement couldn't match Westlife's concert in May.

But the screams were almost as deafening and the certainly loud enough to prompt a fellow photographer in the frontline to hurriedly stuff a pair of earplugs to save her hearing.

We're talking about the second Radio Music Awards last Saturday, July 14 at the Suntec City convention centre.

Starting only half an hour late, the show, complete with 9 singing acts from overseas artistes and 17 local presenters lasted a decent 2 hours.

Despite the smaller names this year (no Coco Lee and Aqua no more) music industry players were pleased with the pace of the show.

Hosts Glenn Ong and Rod Monterio from the Perfect 10 were the obvious highlights of the night.

They slipped in and out of 4 outfits, from spaghetti-strapped lingerie to g-strings to match their morning show companions, Simone, Honky Tonk, Short Fart and Godpa.

The raunchy Kumar did not disappoint either with his campy army-inspired tiny slip of a dress and raucous jokes with fellow presenter Najip.

Cross-dressing and dirty jokes are definitely the formula to driving a crowd wild!

Winners of big awards like Best Male and Female weren't around to claim their trophies. But crowd hottie Bosson brought on unnerving screams in being the first artiste actually present to receive his prize.

You also have to marvel at the brilliance of the person who came up with the idea of the celebrity holding area.

This elevated platform was where the stars strutted around, making small talk with each other and sipping flutes of champagne during the show. It was manna for eager fans and the standing crowd of mostly fanatic teens who nearly went berserk calling out to their idols to pose for their cameras.

And you can bet the stars themselves were more than pleased with the chance to exhibit their sponsored thousand-dollar togs.

Some of them were surely taking stock mentally of how many times their names were yelled out in plain adoration.

Catch the broadcast of the Radio Music Awards 2001 on Channel 5 on July 22, Sunday at 8.30pm.
