It's
New York, New York for Dreamz FM
July 09, 2001
Two weeks ago, Dreamz FM went to New York
to perform at the headquarters of the United Nations for the National
Year of Volunteers. To find out more about their trip, we met up
with the trio at the press conference held to announce Peak Fusion's
sponsorship of Dreamz FM and fellow Hype Records singer Stella Ng
for $50 000 worth of Bayerdynamic.

Ric and Cavin on their escapades
But it was not all downhill for Ric and Cavin who explored the place
separately from Jim.
"We had to walk a lot. Like about 60 over streets
in total and I loved downtown New York. The things there are cheaper
and the people living there are the people of New York. Unlike in
the city, you actually see a lot of Chinese, Indians and people
from various countries, you feel as if it is not very different
from Singapore," explained Cavin.
Ric
mused, "It was quite cute really. It is just like Star Trek. There
are so many different types of people who speak different languages
but they all come together and work together for a common goal."
"One interesting experience we had was when
we went downtown, we came to this place where the people were all
gay. Can you imagine seeing 2 really huge, fat guys holding hands
and smooching like nobody's business? It was certainly an eye opener,"
said Ric.
"Thankfully
we went together in a pair. People won't touch us because they probably
thought we were attached to each other," joked Cavin.
Exploring New York also brought them to the
poorer slums. "We really saw a lot of different people in the city.
There were a lot of poor people who had to sleep on the streets
or sleep in the park but likewise, there were a lot of Mercedes
driving around," says Ric.
Other than the streets of New York, they also
visited the famous Star Bucks café just to get a feel of how different
the café is over there. "It is really crowded," says Ric, "Just
like in the movie, Miss Congeniality. Remember this scene where
a lot of people were queuing up for coffee? That is all true and
it looks just like that!"
"But I'll let you in on a secret," says Cavin,
the joker in the trio. "Singaporeans are really lucky cos the Starbucks
in Singapore serves better coffee."
"Yeah, my order ended up too bland and Cavin's
order too sweet," agreed Ric.
"And to think the price of the coffee there
is easily twice of that in Singapore," exclaimed Cavin.
Bringing back with them all these memories of
the trip, Ric says they will certainly take time to digest their
experience and maybe even write about it in their future albums.
Highlight of the trip- their performance
Despite the entire gripe about New York (it is after all a very
Singaporean trait to gripe about other countries), all 3 agreed
that the trip was not just an eye opener.
And the highlight of this trip was the part where they had to perform
in the United Nations headquarters.
"Even though they looked really serious in the
meetings, the people there were really spontaneous. They would stand
up to clap and sing alongside us when we performed and it was really
cute to see old ladies dancing along to our song," says Cavin.
"We really enjoyed ourselves when we performed,"
agreed Ric.
"It was also quite inspiring in a way. Though
it was a little boring to sit through the meetings, you could see
that they are really serious about helping other people and not
just talking about it. They actually discuss these volunteerism
issues with a lot of passion and this is something I think we don't
get to see in Singapore very often. It almost makes you want to
do something to help too," says Jim.
