It's
New York, New York for Dreamz FM
July 09, 2001
Two weeks ago, Dreamz FM went to New York
to perform at the headquarters of the United Nations for the National
Year of Volunteers. To find out more about their trip, we met up
with the trio at the press conference held to announce Peak Fusion's
sponsorship of Dreamz FM and fellow Hype Records singer Stella Ng
for $50 000 worth of Bayerdynamic.

Down-spirited Jim
And for Jim, the trip was just a series of disappointments starting
from the touch down of their plane because he fell sick even before
he reached there.
"I thought that since it was spring, it would
be quite cool. Imagine my disappointment when I stepped out the
airport and realized that it is just as hot as in Singapore," griped
Jim.
And
the US$150 he brought along for the trip did very little to cheer
him up too. "I found out that the things were very expensive and
when I found out that I had to give a service charge on top of that,
I felt really low," says the singer-producer who only managed to
buy a pair of Nike slippers at the end of the trip.
"I got even more depressed when I found that
there is actually racial discrimination there. They tend to treat
us Asians differently… And of course, I was very disappointed to
find that while the standard of living is rather high, New York
City is actually quite dirty."
It
of course did not cheer him up that upon reaching his hotel
room,
he found that his toilet door had no lock. "I was really unhappy
because well, I was sharing a room and I would feel so insecure
when I am doing my business in the toilet," he said with a cheeky
grin.
"How many depressing things have I named so
far?" he asked after griping for about 5 minutes with a short laugh.
But the ultimate damper came when he was almost
robbed one night on his way back to the hotel alone. "Before I went
there, I already heard that it is quite dangerous in New York. I
was on my way back to the hotel alone when I came to this really
quite street. I saw a group of Negroes and they were staring at
me."
Feeling rather frightened, Jim quickened his
steps. "But they
started to follow me and by then, I was already saying goodbye to
my mother in my heart," recalls Jim with an uneasy laugh. Thankfully,
he managed to reach the main street in no time and all and manage
to lose the group of Negroes altogether.
"Perhaps that night's adventure was too much
for me. Ironically, I slept very soundly after that," he chuckled.
Biggest disappointment
But the biggest disappointment for all 3 was the fact that they
did not really get to see the Statue of Liberty.
"Because there was a really long queue and it
would take a half day boat trip to get there, our boss was suggesting
that we drive over Manhattan bridge to see it instead. 'No problem,
you will definitely be able to see it from there,' he said," Cavin
grinned.
"I thought we would be able to see at least
a 15cm version of the statue," Cavin said animatedly.
"Guess what we saw? We saw the statue no doubt.
But it was only like 2cm big and plus there was a lot of fog. We
could literally see nothing," added Ric.
"It's depressing. Even if you tried to take
a picture of it, it looked so small in your camera you feel as if
it is better to look at a nice picture of it," agreed Jim.
