Comedy Night draws its last breath

December 26, 2000

All good things must come to an end. Having entertained the local audience for a good 10 years, J-Team's Comedy Night finally bade its fans (amidst tears) farewell last night.

It was a night of reunion, reminisces and tears for the hosts and guest stars of Comedy Night. The all-time favorite variety show ended its run on a high note on Christmas Day.

From its early 'Mosses Lim and Jack Neo' talk-show hey days (do you recall 'Ah-Hia' and 'Is my hair messy'?) to the eventually expansion of the team (including popular MediaCorp Studios artistes Mark Lee, Henry Thia and Patricia Mok) in its Courtroom, News and Office Politics series; as well as the well-liked impersonation of Liang Po Po (did we hear you muffle 'Hoo hoo hoo' here?) and Liang Ximei (with her typical 'Nerve-Wrecking' pose), the cast of Comedy Night has come a long way in making its mark as Singapore's funniest bunch.

It was no wondering that many sobbed uncontrollably in gushes of emotional outbursts at the end of its closing episode yesterday.

Patricia Mok, Mark Lee and Lan Xinxi were amongst the first few to break down while their mentor Jack Neo expressed his heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for the audiences' undying support over the past 10 years.

In fact, emotions got the better of the 2 sentimental hosts as they recalled their tough road to success. Jack and Mark were forced to pause in silence as they struggled to hold their composure and fighting back tears during their thank you speech.

Commented Mark: " It's really tough having to be a comedian that can tickle the funny bones of people. I remember the times when we used to sit around at meetings for the whole day brainstorming for jokes and funny ideas in vain. It's difficult and frustrating. It's bad enough if the audience does not laugh at your jokes. But the comedian himself feels much worse for not having done a good job! There were low and bad times in my job but I also I remember the good old days when I first started out with one-liners with Hui-ge (shouting out 'Court' in Shen Jing Yi Fa) and playing the role of Trash Bin. I'm grateful for all the opportunities Comedy Night has given me because that was where I started. Without it, there would be no Mark Lee today."

When asked how Patricia feels about the show that catapulted her to fame and stardom, she replied: "I'm not sure if people might remember Comedy Night 10 years down the road, but I'll miss the happy times we've shared together. My most memorable role in Comedy Night is Little Dragon Girl because that character is rather outstanding and we enjoyed ourselves so much together during rehearsals then. We were laughing our heads off from the beginning till the end of the stint. In fact, it was so fun that it didn't feel like a job!"

"This is a happy occasion as it marks another milestone of Comedy night. It's not a sorrowful end, so we should all be happy about our progress over the years. I've never though Comedy Night would come this far. I had thought initially that it would just sustain for at most a couple of years. Although we are calling Comedy Night a day, we're not calling it quits as yet! Watch out for our brand new comedy series Shen Jing Dian Feng come February 12, 2001 (Monday nights at 8pm on Channel 8) as we continue to keep you entertained," said Jack.

Meanwhile stay tuned and watch this space for more details about the all-new variety show and the hilarious J-Team!
