for 5 more years

Amid the tussle for TV personalities to boast MediaWorks' new TV station, rumours have it that the new kid on the block has also been actively poaching celebrity DJs to firm up its market presence in the radio broadcasting business. Radio Corporation of Singapore (RCS) wins Round 1 of the battle as the little prince of y.e.s 93.3FM - Zhou Chong Qing makes history as the first Chinese DJ to sign a 5-year contract.

YES! Chong Qing is here to stay, despite recent talks that the little prince, who has been garlanded Most Humourous DJ in the recent Golden Mike Awards 2000, will be 'migrating' to a new employer.

In a no-frills signing ceremony held yesterday morning, he pledged his service to none other than his alma mater, RCS - for at least another 5 years - under the witness of Ms Shih Hui Min, Senior Assistant Vice President.

The signing of this 5-year contract also makes him the first Chinese DJ to take such a bold move in RCS' decades of broadcasting business. With immediate effect, the contractual length of services offered to DJs will be similar to those extended to artistes by MediaCorp Studios although Eastciti understands that exceptions can be given on a case-by-case basis.

I am staying!
"RCS has always enjoyed a very strong following of listeners. 93.3FM's popularity is formidable, too. Even with the rise of new competitors over the years, the station is still the No. 1 choice. This gives me a very strong sense of security," said Chong Qing on his decision to take on the current personality (read: celebrity) contract. Of course, it helps that many of his colleagues, such as Dasmond and Hui Shi, are now his great bowling and spa buddies.

The 27-year-old (who really look no more than a 20-year-old with his unbelievably youthful babyface) recounted that RCS has seen him "grown up" for the last 8 years - mainly on part-time and special talent contracts.

The versatile presenter has also dabbled as a TV host ("Unfortunately limited to children's programmes because of my looks," he sniggered) as well as stage plays and drama acting.

Fans can be assured that his interest in these arenas will continue to be supported by the RCS management. Said Ms Shih, "We are all part of the MediaCorp family."

Watch out for his latest stint in the upcoming drama, The Invisible Squad, where he acts opposite Phyllis Quek and Xie Shaoguang as - surprise! - a serial killer. At this point, Eastciti decided that it was high time to unearth some tabloid titillation. So, is he getting a 5-fold increment?

"Let's just put it that I may be able to afford a new house soon, and possible a car too…when I attain my driving licence," quipped the sole breadwinner of the family (his parents and a younger schooling sister) as he let rip a stream of happy (and contented) chuckles.

"I shall go sign up for driving lessons near my home (Yishun) this afternoon."
